What makes Gentoo different from other Linux distros?
Gentoo is source-based. Instead of installing prebuilt binaries, portage compiles each package on the host with the compiler flags and feature toggles (USE flags) you choose. You decide which features each library is built with. TLS or not, IPv6 or not, JIT or not, across the whole system.
What are USE flags?
USE flags are per-package feature toggles in portage. `apache USE="-suexec ssl"` builds Apache with SSL but without suExec. Set them globally in /etc/portage/make.conf or per-package in /etc/portage/package.use. The whole system stays consistent, no half-built features.
Isn't compiling everything slow?
On Cloudzy hardware, no. AMD EPYC, NVMe, and DDR5 mean a base Stage 3 build is fast, and incremental updates are typically minutes not hours. The 8 GB plan is comfortable for daily-driver Gentoo. The 16 GB plan compiles big packages (LLVM, Firefox, qemu) without thrashing.
Which Gentoo profiles do you offer?
Gentoo Stage 3 amd64 OpenRC and systemd profiles as one-click images. Default is the OpenRC profile with the desktop overlay disabled, minimal server build that you can extend with whatever USE flags and packages you want from there.
OpenRC vs systemd on Gentoo?
Gentoo lets you pick. OpenRC is the traditional Gentoo init, small, dependency-based, BSD-style. systemd is also a fully-supported profile if you want unit files and timers. Switch profiles via `eselect profile` and rebuild affected packages.
How fast does Gentoo provision on Cloudzy?
