What is a MikroTik VPS?
A MikroTik VPS is a Linux KVM virtual machine running MikroTik's Cloud Hosted Router (CHR) image. RouterOS as a virtual appliance. You get the same RouterOS feature set as a physical MikroTik device (firewall, VPN, BGP, routing, hotspot, queues), but in a cloud datacenter with a dedicated IPv4 and 40 Gbps networking.
Which RouterOS version is supported?
Any. The CHR image is uploaded to your VPS as a custom ISO from the panel, pick whichever stable or long-term release MikroTik publishes. RouterOS 7.x is the recommended default; RouterOS 6.x is still supported if you have legacy configs.
Do I need a CHR license?
RouterOS CHR has a free license tier (limited to 1 Mbps per interface, fine for testing). For production, pick the P1, P10, or P-Unlimited license, purchased directly from MikroTik for a one-time fee per virtual instance. We don't bundle CHR licenses; you bring your own MikroTik account and key.
What can I do with a MikroTik VPS?
Anything RouterOS does. Common patterns: site-to-site VPN gateway (IPsec, OpenVPN, WireGuard, ZeroTier), BGP edge router for multi-homed networks, hotspot controller for retail / hospitality, queue tree for traffic shaping, firewall for a remote LAN, and a centralized log / SNMP collector for distributed branch offices.
How fast is the network?
40 Gbps shared uplink with dedicated capacity per VPS via hypervisor QoS. CHR licensing tiers cap throughput at the RouterOS level (P1 = 1 Gbps, P10 = 10 Gbps, P-Unlimited = uncapped). If you buy P-Unlimited, you can saturate whatever the underlying VPS plan supports.
Can I run BGP and announce my own prefixes?
Yes within RouterOS. Cloudzy doesn't directly accept BGP from customers (we route your VPS's IPv4 through our edge), but you can establish BGP sessions over IPsec/GRE tunnels to your own upstream carriers and announce prefixes from there. CHR fully supports OSPF, BGP, and MPLS in software.
What's the recommended plan for a CHR P10 (10 Gbps) license?
Start with the 4 GB DDR5 / 2 vCPU plan. RouterOS itself is light, but at 10 Gbps you want CPU headroom for queues, firewall rules, and IPsec encryption. Upgrade to 8 GB if you're running heavy queue trees with BFIFO/PCQ on lots of clients.
Is hotspot (captive portal) supported?
Yes. RouterOS hotspot works on a CHR exactly like on a physical device. Bring your own RADIUS server (or run UserManager on the same VPS), and clients hit the captive portal, log in, and get internet access through your VPS as the gateway.
Can I migrate my config from a physical MikroTik?
Yes. Export the running config from your physical RouterBOARD with `/export` and paste it onto the CHR. Mind the interface names (CHR uses ether1, ether2 instead of physical ports), and re-bind interfaces accordingly. Most users migrate in under 30 minutes for typical configs.
