What is an OpenVPN VPS?
An OpenVPN VPS is a cloud server running the OpenVPN protocol so you can build your own private tunnel. OpenVPN is the veteran VPN protocol, it predates WireGuard by more than a decade, runs over TCP or UDP, and is supported by every operating system, router, and mainstream VPN client. With a Cloudzy VPS you get root access in 60 seconds, install openvpn from your distro's package manager, and you're done.
OpenVPN vs WireGuard, which should I pick?
Pick OpenVPN if you need TCP fallback (some restrictive networks block UDP), need to push complex routing or DNS rules, or have legacy clients that don't speak WireGuard. Pick WireGuard if you want maximum throughput and minimum config. Many people run both on the same VPS, different ports, different use cases.
TCP or UDP, which port should I expose?
UDP 1194 is the default and what you should use whenever possible, it's faster and handles packet loss better. TCP 443 is the fallback for hostile networks (corporate firewalls, hotel Wi-Fi, public networks that block UDP). Many setups run both: UDP for daily use, TCP for when UDP is blocked.
Which clients can connect?
OpenVPN runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, ChromeOS, OpenWRT routers, pfSense, Tomato, and just about anything with a network stack. The official OpenVPN Connect client is the easiest. On Linux you can use openvpn3 or NetworkManager directly.
Do I need OpenVPN Access Server, or is the open-source version enough?
The open-source openvpn package is enough for most use cases, personal VPN, small teams, site-to-site. OpenVPN Access Server adds a web UI, user management, and a few enterprise features but uses a paid license model. We don't bundle it, you choose. PiVPN gives you a friendly setup wizard for the open-source flavour.
How fast does OpenVPN run on a Cloudzy VPS?
OpenVPN is more CPU-bound than WireGuard, it runs in userspace with TLS overhead. On the 4 GB / 2 vCPU plan with AES-256-GCM you'll comfortably see hundreds of Mbps over the 40 Gbps uplink. If raw throughput matters more than compatibility, WireGuard is the better choice.
Is the VPN traffic logged?
We don't log VPN traffic itself, what flows through your tunnel is your business. Standard infrastructure logs (login attempts to the VPS, billing) exist as you'd expect from any cloud provider. OpenVPN's own server log keeps connection events; you can disable or rotate them yourself.
Can I use OpenVPN to access geo-restricted content I legally subscribe to?
Yes, the most common use case. Pick a VPS region in the country whose library you legally have access to, route your client through it, and your apps see that region's IP. Don't use VPNs to bypass content licensing you don't own.
Can I run other services on the same VPS?
Yes. OpenVPN is just a daemon listening on a port, you can also run a web server, a Pi-hole DNS resolver, or any other workload alongside. Many users layer Pi-hole + OpenVPN to get a private, ad-blocking VPN on a single $2.48/mo box.
