What is a Tailscale VPS?
A Tailscale VPS is a cloud server you control where you run the Tailscale daemon (tailscaled). Tailscale is a mesh VPN built on WireGuard that handles the painful parts, key distribution, NAT traversal, ACLs, through a coordination layer, so devices on your tailnet can reach each other directly with almost no config. With root access on Cloudzy you SSH in, run one tailscale up command, and your VPS is part of your tailnet in 30 seconds.
What roles can the VPS play in my tailnet?
Three common ones. Subnet router: bridge the VPS's network (or a network it can reach) to the rest of your tailnet. Exit node: route all internet traffic of selected tailnet devices through the VPS, useful as a 'home country' egress. Always-on relay: stay reachable on a stable IP for friends or services that need a fixed endpoint. You can do all three on one VPS.
Tailscale's free plan vs self-hosted Headscale, what's the difference?
Tailscale's hosted control plane is free for personal use up to 100 devices and 3 users. If you want full control of the coordination plane, run Headscale (the open-source server reimplementation) on the same Cloudzy VPS, your tailnet then has zero dependency on a third-party SaaS. Headscale is BYO-policy, BYO-MFA, BYO-everything.
Will my Cloudzy VPS work as an exit node?
Yes. Run tailscale up --advertise-exit-node, approve it from the admin panel, and any tailnet device can opt to route its full traffic through the VPS. With AMD EPYC + 40 Gbps + dedicated IPv4 the bottleneck is rarely the host, it's usually the client side.
Does it work behind NAT or carrier-grade NAT?
Yes. Tailscale's coordination layer handles NAT traversal automatically. Even when both peers are behind hostile NATs, traffic falls back to a DERP relay so the connection stays up. On a Cloudzy VPS with a public dedicated IPv4 you're the easy side of every connection.
Is the traffic logged?
We don't log VPN traffic itself, what flows through your tailnet is your business. Standard infrastructure logs (login attempts to the VPS, billing) exist as you'd expect from any cloud provider. Tailscale's daemon logs are local; if you self-host Headscale, you control everything.
Can I run Tailscale alongside other services?
Yes. tailscaled is a single daemon listening on its own UDP port. You can run a web server, a Pi-hole, an Outline server, or any other workload on the same VPS. Many users put their entire homelab control plane (DNS, dashboards, SSH bastion) on a single Cloudzy VPS reachable only over Tailscale.
Which region should I pick?
For an exit node, pick a region close to where you actually use the internet, that's where your traffic will appear to come from. For a subnet router, pick the region nearest the network you're bridging. For a Headscale control plane, anywhere with low latency to most of your devices works.
How fast is Tailscale on a Cloudzy VPS?
Direct peer-to-peer Tailscale connections run at WireGuard speed, gigabits per second on a 4 GB / 2 vCPU AMD EPYC plan. When traffic falls back to DERP relays (rare but possible behind tough NATs), throughput is bounded by the relay's bandwidth, not your VPS.
