What is Windows Server 2003 VPS?
A Windows Server 2003 VPS is a virtual private server running Microsoft's Server 2003 / 2003 R2 release. Server 2003 reached end-of-life on July 14, 2015. Cloudzy hosts it strictly for compatibility with apps that simply will not run on anything newer. You connect over RDP, get full administrator rights, and inherit all the security expectations of running an unsupported OS.
Should I really run Server 2003 in 2026?
Only if you have an app that absolutely refuses to run anywhere else and you've ruled out every other option, application virtualization, in-guest emulation, vendor support contracts, app rewrites. Server 2003 receives no security patches and has no ESU program. Run it isolated behind your VPN, never expose it to the open internet.
What about the Windows Server 2003 license?
These legacy versions are offered for compatibility with apps that won't run elsewhere. You'll need to provide your own license. Microsoft no longer issues new licenses or trial keys for Server 2003, so bring your existing volume key, OEM license, or per-server license.
Can I get security patches?
No. Microsoft ended free support in 2015 and the Custom Support Agreement program is no longer accepting new customers. Treat the VPS as untrusted at the network edge, keep it behind your VPN or firewall, allowlist source IPs for RDP, and isolate it from any sensitive systems.
What can Server 2003 run?
IIS 6, AD DS 2003, SQL Server 2000/2005/2008, classic ASP, ASP.NET 2.0/3.5, .NET Framework 2.0/3.5, Win32 apps from that era, and PowerShell 1.0/2.0. It does not run modern .NET, modern TLS, or anything from the post-2008 Windows toolchain.
