What is Windows Server 2008 VPS?
A Windows Server 2008 VPS is a virtual private server running Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2. Server 2008 reached end-of-life on January 14, 2020. Cloudzy hosts it strictly for compatibility with legacy applications. You connect over RDP, get full administrator rights, but expect no security patches outside paid Microsoft Extended Security Updates (ESU).
Should I run Server 2008 in production?
Only if you have absolutely no alternative. Server 2008 is end-of-life and outside ESU receives no security updates. Pick 2008 only when you're keeping a vendor-tied app alive while you replace it, and isolate the VPS behind your own firewall and VPN. For everything else, pick a current LTSC like Server 2022 or 2025.
What about the Windows Server 2008 license?
These legacy versions are offered for compatibility with apps that won't run elsewhere. You'll need to provide your own license. Microsoft no longer issues new licenses or trial keys for Server 2008, so bring your existing volume key or per-server license.
Can I get security patches?
Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates program for Server 2008/2008 R2 ended in January 2023. There are no first-party patches available now, even with payment. Treat the VPS as untrusted at the network edge, keep it behind your VPN or firewall, and monitor it tightly.
What can Server 2008 R2 run?
IIS 7.5, AD DS 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008/2012, ASP.NET 4.0/4.5, .NET Framework 4.x, classic ASP, PowerShell 2.0/3.0, and most Win32 apps from that era. It does not support modern .NET (Core/5+), TLS 1.3, or any post-2014 Windows feature.
