About Slackware
Slackware is an old, trusted Linux distribution that is favored for its simplicity and efficiency. Born in 1993, Slackware is, in fact, the oldest Linux distro still maintained and upgraded. The distro is also famous for being the basis for the first SUSE Linux versions. Unlike more common distros available today, Slackware is technical through and through. There is no graphic interface for installation and no default desktop environment. Even package dependency resolution is left to the user. These features give admins an unrivaled level of control over all aspects of the operating system, which can be a great asset for administering a server. Like Arch Linux, Slackware uses “build scripts” to allow users to package any software they need into locally optimized binaries.
Slackware Features
-
Super Stable
Slackware is known for its stable releases. New versions are released far apart but that means only the most thoroughly tested, stable configuration and packages are included in each release. -
Simple, Seamless Development
Like Arch Linux, Slackware follows the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle, adhering to a minimalist design. Most of the development for new releases is done by only one person, the founder of Slackware Linux, so the code is bound to be cohesive. -
SlackBuilds
Extensive repository of user-created software with shell scripts ready to be compiled on your system, ensuring complete compatibility with your hardware. -
Dedicated Desktop Environments
You can install one of several desktop environments specially developed for Slackware, like Dropline GNOME and SlackMATE.
-
Test of Time
Slackware is the oldest Linux distro maintained today, nearing its 30th anniversary. It has withstood the test of time with flying colors. -
Resource-Efficient
In installing Slackware, you’re free to choose only what you need, avoiding useless overhead. That and its minimalism make Slackware extremely resource-efficient. -
Ultra-high Uptime
What good is server uptime if your OS keeps crashing? Slackware’s uptime is one of the highest among all operating systems and is measured in years!
When to Choose Slackware VPS
-
Server Administration
If you are comfortable running a server from the command line, Slackware can give you an added level of control over all aspects of your server. -
Coding
Slackware is great for developers who want to get more out of their time without fancy but useless features. -
Server with Limited Resources
If you plan to pick an operating system for a system with limited resources, a basic VPS plan, for example, Slackware is the way to go. It can even be installed on really old, low-spec systems and get them to work without a hitch. -
Learning Linux
If you’re a mid-level Linux user and you like to improve your in-depth understanding of Linux and its components, simply installing and using Slackware is a great choice. It has just the right level of difficulty to be challenging without becoming impossible.

FAQ | Slackware VPS
What is VPS Hosting?
A Virtual Private Server is a popular hosting solution that falls somewhere between shared hosting and dedicated servers. A VPS shares a physical server infrastructure with a few other instances but since its resources are assigned beforehand, it doesn’t need to compete for them. That means much better performance and higher security compared to shared hosting solutions. A VPS isn’t much less powerful than a dedicated server but it is so much more affordable, making it the best of both worlds. You can read more about VPS hosting and how we do it here.
What is Slackware VPS Hosting?
As the name suggests, it is a VPS with Slackware as the operating system, but it’s also more than that. They are optimized to make the most out of Slackware’s capabilities.
How can I connect to my Slackware VPS?
You can use a remote desktop client like Remmina or TeamViewer to connect to your Slackware VPS via the VNC protocol. Since you will have full root access, you can also use SSH to connect and configure your VPS, but. unlike VNC, SSH only supports a text-based interface, giving you access to the terminal.
What versions of Slackware do you offer?
We offer the latest version of Slackware as well as any version you may need for your VPS, including 14.2, 14.1, and even older releases. You can also ask for a rolling release version, which is less stable but has more updated features.
Will my VPS come with Slackware pre-installed?
If you want your Slackware VPS with the OS already installed, you only need to request it when ordering your VPS. We do, however, recommend that you install it yourself since only you need what components you need, and being able to select them is part of Slackware’s charm.
What’s so great about KVM?
Kernel-based Virtual Machine technology allows us to create virtual servers that perform faster and better, with more flexibility and zero resource contention. That means a high-performance, reliable VPS for you to use as you see fit.
