Which MySQL version is current?
Modern MySQL 8 versions are available via apt on Ubuntu/Debian and dnf on Alma/Rocky. Use the official MySQL apt/dnf repo for the latest GA release. MariaDB 11 is a drop-in replacement if you prefer.
MySQL or MariaDB?
Both work for any MySQL-compatible app. MariaDB has more features in some areas (advanced storage engines, better optimizer in some cases). MySQL has Oracle backing and Group Replication. Pick what your team knows.
How much RAM does MySQL need?
Tune innodb_buffer_pool_size to ~70-80% of RAM for a dedicated DB server. Small app: 2-4 GB. Mid-size: 8-16 GB. Heavy: 32-64 GB. NVMe storage helps when buffer pool can't hold the working set.
Can I set up replication?
Yes. With root and 12 regions, you can set up async replication, semi-sync, or Group Replication. Standard primary + N replicas, or multi-source. Use ProxySQL in front for routing reads to replicas.
Should I use ProxySQL or HAProxy?
ProxySQL understands the MySQL protocol - it can route reads vs writes, multiplex connections, and rewrite queries. HAProxy is L4 - simpler but less smart. For most production MySQL setups, ProxySQL is worth the extra config.
What about backups?
mysqldump for logical backups, Percona XtraBackup for hot physical backups (no lock). Push to S3-compatible offsite storage. Pair with binlog archiving for point-in-time recovery.
