Snapshot cloning is a powerful feature that allows you to deploy the data from an existing VPS onto a completely new VPS. This is particularly useful for resizing your server, adjusting your billing cycle, or moving to a higher or lower plan while keeping your existing configurations and files intact.
Important Notes Before Cloning
Snapshot cloning creates a new VPS. You cannot clone data onto an existing VPS, and the IP address of the new server will change. CPU type and region remain the same as the original VPS and cannot be modified during the cloning process. Changing the operating system or moving disk data to a new OS will erase all original data, so these actions should only be done intentionally.
This means that snapshot cloning is best used when you want to:
-
Upgrade or downgrade your plan
-
Change the billing cycle of your VPS
Avoid using snapshot cloning to:
-
Change OS, CPU type, or server region
How to Clone a VPS Using Snapshots
-
Take a Snapshot: First, create a snapshot of the VPS you want to clone.
-
Open the Snapshots Tab: Navigate to the Snapshots tab for that VPS.
-
Clone to a New VPS: Click the three dots next to the snapshot and select “Clone to New VPS.”
-
Configure the New VPS: You can now set the specifications or billing cycle for the new VPS before deployment.
Important: This process creates a new VPS. You cannot clone data onto an existing server.
Key Considerations During Cloning
-
IP Address Change: The new VPS will receive a new IP address.
-
Disk Data and OS: If the new plan includes disk storage, the data on that disk will overwrite any existing files. Changing the OS will erase all data from the cloned snapshot.
-
CPU and Region: These parameters cannot be changed during cloning. The new VPS will inherit the CPU type and region of the original server.
-
Best Practices: To minimize risks, only use snapshot cloning to change your plan or billing cycle. Avoid OS changes or attempting to clone onto an existing VPS.
By following these steps, you can safely duplicate your VPS setup onto a new server, preserving your existing configurations while adjusting your plan or billing preferences. Proper planning is essential to prevent data loss and ensure your new VPS functions as intended.
